SUMMARY:Family Matters
DESCRIPTION:Spanning twenty-four years and four distinct time periods\, Family Matters follows the seemingly ordinary lives of a Taiwanese family. Each member faces a life-altering challenge: the elder sister seeks her true origins\, the younger brother meets his birth father by chance\, the mother grapples with artificial insemination\, and the father desperately tries to turn his life around. \n\n\n\nTold from the perspectives of different family members\, the film delves into the complexities of family bonds and how love and resilience shape their lives. SUMMARY:Special Presentation: Saving Face
DESCRIPTION:A queer romantic comedy set in vibrant\, multicultural New York City\, Alice Wu’s irresistible feature debut breathed fresh life into the genre by combining snappy dialogue and a swooning love story with a poignant narrative about a mother and daughter coming to terms with each other. Just as Wil (Michelle Krusiec)\, a harried young surgical resident\, begins a promising romance with the flirtatious dancer Vivian (Lynn Chen)\, her life is turned upside down when her more traditional Chinese mother (Joan Chen)—unwed and unexpectedly pregnant—moves in with her\, forcing both women to confront the generational and cultural barriers that have long troubled their relationship. Both embracing and cleverly subverting rom-com conventions\, Wu delivers a bighearted ode to the Chinese American diaspora\, and the liberating joy of living one’s truth.

SUMMARY:Mozart’s Idomeneo
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Boston Baroque \n\n\n\nMozart’s Idomeneo\n\n\n\n\nBoston Baroque proudly presents Idomeneo\, the powerful opera by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart that explores the tragic conflict between duty and love. Premiered in Munich in 1781 for the court of Elector Karl Theodor of Bavaria\, the opera was written at a time when Mozart was eager to establish himself as a serious composer of opera seria. Drawing on the classical tradition of Italian opera\, he infused Idomeneo with unprecedented emotional depth\, psychological realism\, and dramatic sophistication. Each aria and ensemble is carefully crafted to reveal the inner conflicts of the characters\, showcasing Mozart’s mastery of orchestration and his innovative approach to character development\, rather than simply highlighting vocal virtuosity. \n\n\n\nThe libretto\, based on a Greek myth\, enabled Mozart to explore themes of duty\, sacrifice\, and human frailty. He pushed the boundaries of the form by blending the formal elegance of opera seria with sudden bursts of dramatic tension and expressive orchestral color. Notably\, Idomeneo includes intricate ensembles\, choruses\, and orchestral passages that heighten the emotional stakes\, a bold move for its time. Mozart’s score also hints at the influence of The Enlightenment\, emphasizing moral dilemmas and the complex interplay of personal desire and social responsibility. \n\n\n\nSet in the aftermath of the Trojan War\, the opera follows King Idomeneo of Crete as he returns home from battle. When a violent storm threatens to destroy his fleet\, he makes a desperate vow to Neptune that he will sacrifice the first living being he encounters upon reaching land if his life is spared. Fate intervenes when that person turns out to be his own son\, Idamante. As Idomeneo struggles with the devastating promise he has made\, a web of love\, jealousy\, and loyalty unfolds: Idamante and the Trojan princess Ilia fall deeply in love\, while the fiery Elettra\, daughter of Agamemnon\, burns with jealous desire for Idamante. \n\n\n\nThis semi-staged production is led by conductor David Bates and stage director Bill Barclay and features an exceptional cast\, including David Portillo as Idomeneo\, Valerie Eickhoff as Idamante\, Hera Hyesang Park as Ilia\, Omar Najmi as Arbace\, Wendy Bryn Harmer as Elettra\, and Joel Clemens as La Voce. \n\n\n\nThe opera will be performed at Boston’s Emerson Paramount Center\, a beautifully restored 1930s movie palace located in the vibrant Theater District. The elegant Robert J. Orchard Stage\, with its intimate 572-seat capacity and art deco design\, offers an immersive atmosphere that perfectly complements the emotional depth and grandeur of Mozart’s masterpiece. \n\n\n\nJoin us for this historic first presentation of Idomeneo by Boston Baroque\, where myth\, music\, and heartfelt drama combine in an unforgettable operatic experience. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Info\n\n\n\nDates\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nApril 26 AT 3:00 pm – 6:00 pm \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVenue\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDetails\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n3 Hours wtih 20 minute intermission \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAll Ages \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPerformed in Italian with surtitles \n\n\n\n\n\nLearn More \n\n\n\n\n\nHealth & Safety Information
