SUMMARY:Special Presentation: Saving Face
DESCRIPTION:A queer romantic comedy set in vibrant\, multicultural New York City\, Alice Wu’s irresistible feature debut breathed fresh life into the genre by combining snappy dialogue and a swooning love story with a poignant narrative about a mother and daughter coming to terms with each other. Just as Wil (Michelle Krusiec)\, a harried young surgical resident\, begins a promising romance with the flirtatious dancer Vivian (Lynn Chen)\, her life is turned upside down when her more traditional Chinese mother (Joan Chen)—unwed and unexpectedly pregnant—moves in with her\, forcing both women to confront the generational and cultural barriers that have long troubled their relationship. Both embracing and cleverly subverting rom-com conventions\, Wu delivers a bighearted ode to the Chinese American diaspora\, and the liberating joy of living one’s truth.

SUMMARY:Mozart’s Idomeneo
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Boston Baroque \n\n\n\nMozart’s Idomeneo\n\n\n\n\nBoston Baroque proudly presents Idomeneo\, the powerful opera by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart that explores the tragic conflict between duty and love. Premiered in Munich in 1781 for the court of Elector Karl Theodor of Bavaria\, the opera was written at a time when Mozart was eager to establish himself as a serious composer of opera seria. Drawing on the classical tradition of Italian opera\, he infused Idomeneo with unprecedented emotional depth\, psychological realism\, and dramatic sophistication. Each aria and ensemble is carefully crafted to reveal the inner conflicts of the characters\, showcasing Mozart’s mastery of orchestration and his innovative approach to character development\, rather than simply highlighting vocal virtuosity. \n\n\n\nThe libretto\, based on a Greek myth\, enabled Mozart to explore themes of duty\, sacrifice\, and human frailty. He pushed the boundaries of the form by blending the formal elegance of opera seria with sudden bursts of dramatic tension and expressive orchestral color. Notably\, Idomeneo includes intricate ensembles\, choruses\, and orchestral passages that heighten the emotional stakes\, a bold move for its time. Mozart’s score also hints at the influence of The Enlightenment\, emphasizing moral dilemmas and the complex interplay of personal desire and social responsibility. \n\n\n\nSet in the aftermath of the Trojan War\, the opera follows King Idomeneo of Crete as he returns home from battle. When a violent storm threatens to destroy his fleet\, he makes a desperate vow to Neptune that he will sacrifice the first living being he encounters upon reaching land if his life is spared. Fate intervenes when that person turns out to be his own son\, Idamante. As Idomeneo struggles with the devastating promise he has made\, a web of love\, jealousy\, and loyalty unfolds: Idamante and the Trojan princess Ilia fall deeply in love\, while the fiery Elettra\, daughter of Agamemnon\, burns with jealous desire for Idamante. \n\n\n\nThis semi-staged production is led by conductor David Bates and stage director Bill Barclay and features an exceptional cast\, including David Portillo as Idomeneo\, Valerie Eickhoff as Idamante\, Hera Hyesang Park as Ilia\, Omar Najmi as Arbace\, Wendy Bryn Harmer as Elettra\, and Joel Clemens as La Voce. \n\n\n\nThe opera will be performed at Boston’s Emerson Paramount Center\, a beautifully restored 1930s movie palace located in the vibrant Theater District. The elegant Robert J. Orchard Stage\, with its intimate 572-seat capacity and art deco design\, offers an immersive atmosphere that perfectly complements the emotional depth and grandeur of Mozart’s masterpiece. \n\n\n\nJoin us for this historic first presentation of Idomeneo by Boston Baroque\, where myth\, music\, and heartfelt drama combine in an unforgettable operatic experience. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Info\n\n\n\nDates\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nApril 26 AT 3:00 pm – 6:00 pm \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVenue\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDetails\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n3 Hours wtih 20 minute intermission \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAll Ages \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPerformed in Italian with surtitles \n\n\n\n\n\nLearn More \n\n\n\n\n\nHealth & Safety Information

SUMMARY:The Maids
DESCRIPTION:Presented by ArtBuzz Productions & Sheep. Co Entertainment \n\n\n\nThe Maids\n\n\n\nby Roman Viktyuk\n\n\n\nbased on the play by J. Genet \n\n\n\n\nRoman Viktyuk’s legendary play “The Maids” has been on stage for over 35 years — and it still astonishes audiences! The production is based on the play by French playwright Jean Genet. \n\n\n\nIt tells the story of two maids\, Solange and Claire\, who worship their Mistress while at the same time being consumed by envy. In her absence\, they try on her clothes\, imitate her behavior\, and act out elaborate imaginary scenes. One day\, carried away by their game\, they anonymously report Madame’s lover to the police – and decide to kill her. \n\n\n\nThe actors bring this psychological drama to life through choreography\, movement\, and vocal expression. The intricate makeup evokes Japanese Kabuki theatre – a synthesis of music\, dance\, and drama\, where makeup carries deep symbolic meaning. \n\n\n\nThe entire performance unfolds as a hypnotic show set to Dalida’s greatest hits\, where the audience finds itself sympathizing with these failed criminals and applauding them in fascination. “I believe that ‘The Maids’ should be performed by men. Only men\,” said the legendary director Roman Viktyuk. And after seeing the show\, it’s hard to disagree. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Info\n\n\n\nDates\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVenue\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDetails\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n2 Hours 30 mins\, no intermission \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAge 16+ \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPerformed in Russian \n\n\n\n\n\nHealth & Safety Information

In only 24 songs\, Starting Here\, Starting Now offers a tender-tough inventory of love and the lonesome lack thereof. SUMMARY:A Streetcar Named Desire
DESCRIPTION:A Streetcar Named Desire\n\n\n\nPresented by Boston Lyric Opera \n\n\n\n\n“Real? Who wants real?… I want magic!” \n\n\n\nThe sweltering heat of a New Orleans summer sets the tone for the simmering tensions that crackle and spark between the unforgettable characters of Tennessee Williams’ Pulitzer Prize-winning play\, set to André Previn’s luminous score. Magnetic but self-deluded Blanche DuBois leaves her Mississippi hometown and seeks shelter with her sister Stella and her husband Stanley. Clinging to a romanticized image of the past\, she quickly finds herself at odds with the domineering Stanley\, whose brutal realism clashes ruthlessly with her worldview. Cruelty\, desire\, illusion\, and fear of change are on raw display as the resulting events send everyone involved careening toward destruction. \n\n\n\nDaniela Candillari returns to BLO for the first time since conducting 2022’s award-winning cinematic opera Svadba. She joins forces with internationally famous singer\, stage director\, and arts leader Patricia Racette (BLO’s The Tales of Hoffmann\, 1992) to helm this compelling production. Brittany Renee\, Angela Yam\, Thomas Glass\, and Brenton Ryan head the cast of a lyrical\, emotionally exposed work that demands honesty and vulnerability from its performers and audiences alike. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Info\n\n\n\nDates\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVenue\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDetails\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n3 Hours with a 20 minute intermission \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSung in English with English surtitles \n\n\n\n\nContent Warning: Please note this production contains onstage depictions of sexual assault and domestic violence\, as well as xenophobic language\, references to alcoholism\, and mental health conditions including anxiety\, depression\, and suicide. \n\n\n\nLearn More \n\n\n\n\nHealth & Safety Information

SUMMARY:ALTRUISM & OTHER LIES
DESCRIPTION:Emerson Stage Presents: \n\n\n\nThe Rod Parker Fellowship Production \n\n\n\nALTRUISM & OTHER LIES\n\n\n\nBy J.W. AndrewDirected by Joe Antoun \n\n\n\n\nA modern take on the screwball comedy of remarriage. To spare Frank’s feelings\, his ex-wife\, June\, has kept her current serious romance hidden and has overtly pretended to be in a hopelessly depressive state. Eager to see June move on from their divorce\, Frank suggests that he sets her up on a date which June agrees to on the terms that it is a double date with Frank and someone of her choosing. On the night of the date\, June must bolster Frank while tanking her portion of the date\, all while ensuring the evening ends with enough time to make a late dinner with her boyfriend and his boss. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Info\n\n\n\nDates\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVenue\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDetails\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n1 Hour 30 mins\, including one 15 min intermission \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAges 13+ \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nContent Warning: \n\n\n\nIncludes themes such as infidelity and marital conflict. \n\n\n\n\n\nHealth & Safety Information

SUMMARY:The Marriage of Figaro
DESCRIPTION:The Marriage of Figaro\n\n\n\n(Le nozze di Figaro)\n\n\n\nPresented by Boston Lyric Opera \n\n\n\n\nOne wedding. One day. Total chaos.Wit\, mayhem\, and hilarity abound in Mozart’s fan-favorite comedy that packs a lot of action into a single day! \n\n\n\nShort version (no\, really): Figaro and his fiancée Susanna work for the philandering Count\, who is determined to seduce Susanna before the wedding. An infuriated Figaro swears he will outsmart the Count; meanwhile\, Susanna teams up with the neglected Countess and the lovable Cherubino to accomplish the same goal on her own terms. Beneath the story’s light-hearted surface is a skillful and nuanced criticism of aristocratic privilege. Gorgeous music accompanies all your favorite opera tropes – mistaken identities\, disguises\, elaborate plots backfiring – culminating in a celebration of love and forgiveness. \n\n\n\nA highlight of the 50th Anniversary Season\, The Marriage of Figaro returns to BLO for the first time since 2017\, in a new production conducted by David Angus and directed by Anne Bogart. Expect spirited performances from Michael Sumuel (Figaro)\, Madison Leonard (Susanna)\, Dean Murphy (Count)\, Masabane Cecilia Rangwanasha (Countess)\, Sun-Ly Pierce (Cherubino)\, and more in this enduring classic that delivers silliness and sincerity in equal measure. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Info\n\n\n\nDates\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVenue\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDetails\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n3 Hours with a 20 minute intermission \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAll Ages \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSung in Italian with English surtitles \n\n\n\n\nLearn more about the company \n\n\n\n\nHealth & Safety Information
